Chicken Creek's Breeding Lines ~ Jerry Foley & Duane Urch
Wyandotte’s are a favorite amongst backyard flock owners and chicken fanciers alike. They are dependable egg layers of about 220 nicely shaped light brown eggs per year eggs on average, and lay all year long. They have a very easy going nature and calm temperament about them. They are gentle and elegant birds that are very social. Wyandotte hens are excellent broodies and make very good mothers. Both our Blue Laced Reds and our Silver Laced Wyandottes have come from Jerry Foley’s Line. In fact our foundation breeding stock was bought directly from Mr. Foley himself when we visited him at his farm. Our Gold Laced Wyandottes are from Duane Urch’s Line. Wyandotte’s have a heavy body, clean legs and a small rose comb. This robust and cold hardy breed is relatively easy to care for. It is hardy and adaptable, which makes it a great choice for first time chicken buyers and those wanting a dependable winter egg layer. Wyandotte’s will thrive in free range situations and will also adapt well to confined environments. Their attractive curvy shape, sweet disposition and consistent ability to lay make them a good choice for fanciers as well as farmers. With so many beautiful feather colors and patterns to choose from there is sure to be a Wyandotte variety for everyone.
Understanding the colors of Blue Laced Reds ~ I always thought a 'Blue-Laced Red Wyndotte' was dark blue with mahogany. I had seen the light power blue birds, but thought they were of a different quality. Come to find out ... there are three colors in the 'Blue-Laced Red Wyndotte' (also called just 'BLR').
There are 3 colors - blue, black and splash (splash is also known as 'sport'). We have all 3 colors in our breeding program. And how they breed is similar to many other chicken breeds that have a blue / black / splash color. The black birds are called 'Black-Laced Red Wyndottes'. The 'Black-Laced' are truely part of the 'Blue-Laced Red' variety. If you breed blue to blue (ie. a blue hen to a blue rooster), you need to breed back to a black every other generation (to every three generations) to keep the dark blue color. The splash variety is a light powder blue with the same dark mahogany.
Blue x Blue = 50% Blue , 25% Black , 25% Splash
Blue x Splash = 50% Blue , 50% Splash
